FAQ

Is the TDengine Free Tier a trial?

No. It is not a time-limited trial or a reduced-function edition. TDengine is free forever for deployments of up to 5,000 tags, with free annual license renewal.

What does “free forever” mean if the license is valid for one year?

Each Free Tier license is valid for one year. Beginning 30 days before expiration, TDengine displays a renewal reminder in the system management interface. You can renew online at no charge and receive another one-year license. There is no limit on the number of renewals.

Who can use the TDengine Free Tier?

Anyone can use it. The Free Tier is available to individuals, teams, and organizations of any size. No application, approval, or qualification is required.

Can I use the Free Tier in production?

Yes. You can use it for evaluation, development, proof-of-concept projects, and production deployments of up to 5,000 tags.

What counts as a tag?

A tag is one independently measured time-series signal, typically represented by an asset or device combined with a measurement.

For example:

Pump-101 / Discharge Pressure

The sampling frequency does not change the tag count. Quality values, annotations, static attributes, and internal system-management time series are not counted as additional tags.

What is included in the Free Tier?

The Free Tier includes the complete TDengine platform:

  • Industrial data ingestion and zero-code Data In connectors
  • High-performance time-series data storage
  • Industrial data modeling and contextualization
  • Dashboards, trends, reports, and Canvas/P&ID visualization
  • Event management and event frames
  • Real-time and advanced analytics
  • KPI calculations and reporting
  • AI-powered insights
  • Excel integration
  • User management and role-based access control
  • Single-node and multi-node high-availability deployment

These are the same core software capabilities available with commercial TDengine licensing.

Are any application features disabled?

No. The Free Tier does not remove application modules or artificially restrict functionality. Its main capacity limit is 5,000 tags.

Separate licensing rules apply to direct third-party queries against the Enterprise TSDB bundled with the TDengine All-in-One Package.

Are performance levels reduced?

No. TDengine does not artificially throttle ingestion, queries, analytics, or application performance in the Free Tier. Actual performance depends on your infrastructure, configuration, and workload.

Does the Free Tier support high availability?

Yes. TDengine Free Tier supports deployments ranging from a single node to a multi-node high-availability cluster, including multi-replica data protection.

High availability is included and is not a separately paid feature within the 5,000-tag Free Tier.

Which deployment options are supported?

The TDengine All-in-One Package supports Windows, Linux, and Docker. It can be deployed on local servers, virtual machines, edge infrastructure, or customer-managed cloud infrastructure.

How do I obtain and activate the free license?

After installing TDengine, complete the online registration process when you first access the system. TDengine will then generate and activate the one-year Free Tier license.

Is an internet connection required?

An internet connection is required for initial registration and license activation and for annual renewal.

Organizations that require a completely air-gapped license-management process should contact TDengine about commercial licensing options.

Does the TDengine All-in-One Package include TDengine TSDB?

Yes. The All-in-One Package includes TDengine TSDB Enterprise as the dedicated data engine supporting the complete TDengine platform.

However, the bundled TSDB is not licensed as a free standalone TDengine TSDB Enterprise deployment.Organizations that require a completely air-gapped license-management process should contact TDengine about commercial licensing options.

Can third-party applications query the bundled TSDB directly?

Direct third-party queries are not included with the bundled TSDB license.

TDengine and official TDengine components can query the bundled TSDB. Direct queries from third-party database clients or tools require a separate TDengine TSDB Enterprise license.

For example, connecting Grafana directly to the bundled TSDB requires a separate TSDB Enterprise license. This does not affect the dashboards, visualization, analytics, reports, or AI capabilities included within TDengine.

Can external systems still write data into TDengine?

Yes. The direct-query restriction does not prevent normal data ingestion. External systems can write data into TDengine through supported interfaces and Data In connectors.

Can TDengine connect to an existing TDengine TSDB deployment?

Yes. If you already operate TDengine TSDB OSS or Enterprise, you can install the TDengine application layer separately and configure it to use your existing TSDB deployment.

Your existing TSDB deployment and licensing remain unchanged.

Are all capabilities available when connecting to TDengine TSDB OSS?

Most TDengine application capabilities can be used with TDengine TSDB OSS. However, capabilities that depend on TDengine TSDB Enterprise—such as taosX-based zero-code data ingestion and management—require the Enterprise edition.

For the complete experience, use the TDengine All-in-One Package or connect to an existing TDengine TSDB Enterprise deployment.

What support is included?

The Free Tier includes public documentation, tutorials, and community support. It does not include direct technical support, guaranteed response times, or SLA coverage.

Organizations that need support for production deployments can purchase Enterprise Support, including direct assistance, defined response times, troubleshooting, and SLA coverage.

Contact us for Enterprise Support or professional services.

What happens if I need more than 5,000 tags?

You can upgrade to a commercial TDengine license, which removes the 5,000-tag limit and supports larger deployments and additional commercial licensing requirements.

Will I need to reinstall TDengine when I upgrade?

No. Upgrading only requires replacing the software license. Your existing data, configurations, asset models, dashboards, reports, and analytics tasks remain in place.
